Red Cross Strike Fails to Hit Blood Supply

Notwithstanding the strike by some local American Red Cross employees and a decision by the organisation not to take any blood donations in the area until the agitators returned to work, health officials have allayed the fears of blood shortage due to the protest.

The Director of the blood lab at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Michael McGowan, says the institution receives 80-90% of its blood supply from its own lab. The hospital, which is one of only two in Ohio with its own donor program, only gets 10-15% blood supply from the American Red Cross.

FDA’s Fresh Guidelines on Asthma Drugs’ Usage

Aimed at instructing doctors on the usage of products that are meant for the most severe cases of asthma, the Food and Drug Administration has issued tougher warnings regarding a class of long-acting asthma drugs.

Announced Wednesday, the new guidelines would affect GlaxoSmithKline PLC's (GSK) Advair and Serevent, Novartis AG's (NVS) Foradil, which is marketed in the U. S. by Merck & Co. Inc. (MRK), and AstraZeneca PLC's (AZN) Symbicort. While GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca had to be ordered to make the label changes, other companies agreed voluntarily to the new labels, the FDA said.

According to a new study, meditation helps in making pain less unpleasant and decreases its emotional affect.

To arrive at the conclusion, scientists from The University of Manchester hired individuals into the study who had a different range of experience with meditation, straddling anything from months to decades.

It was only the more superior meditators whose expectation and experience of pain varied from non-meditators.

Aurora Ranks the Best Children Hospital

The U. S. News & World Report has, in its annual statement, presented Aurora, The Children Hospital, as a top rank holder among all the children hospitals in the country. The hospital has been given this rank in nine of 10 specialty categories. The hospital ranks in top 20 in other eight specialty categories, including diabetes, endocrinology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, neonatology, orthopedics, cancer, heart, neurology and neurosurgery.

"This is a fantastic news, not just for us but for the children of Colorado," says Jim Shmerling, President and CEO of The Children's Hospital.

Borders General Hospital Hit By Vomiting Bug

It has been reported that two wards at Borders General Hospital were closed after the patients began to display the symptoms of the norovirus, the diarrhoea and vomiting illness. The wards are not admitting new patients in these two wards.

A spokesman from NHS Borders said that they have introduced a number of restrictions at the hospital and other health-care facilities. Visitors have been asked to go straight to the wards and not to move around other areas of the hospital

Post-Mastectomy Radiation Therapy Found to Elevate Breast Cancer Survival Rate

A recent study has found that the post-mastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) elevates the breast cancer survival rates.

This research study also revealed that PMRT is capable of lessening the risk of recurrence of breast cancer in patients by almost 30%. This in turn raises the five-year overall survival in patients by 50%.

The study was concluded after observing 544 patients suffering with T1-2 N1 invasive breast cancer. All these patients were treated with modified radical mastectomy between April 1991 and December 2005.

It has been reported by scientists from the American Chemical Society on ScienceDaily that soon a ‘dipstick’ test will be used by physicians for determining a person's blood type, doing away with the complicated lab equipments.

Scientists claim that simply placing a drop of blood on a paper strip will make it possible to know the blood type of a patient.

This discovery was reported in ACS' semi-monthly journal Analytical Chemistry. In the report, the test has been explained in detail.
